WHERE TO STAY

Three Ways to Stay in Ngorongoro

Choose from crater-rim luxury, immersive highland lodges, or a relaxed base just outside the conservation area.

Staying on the Ngorongoro Crater Rim

Lodges perched directly on the crater rim offer breathtaking views and the quickest access to the crater floor, allowing early entry and fewer vehicles during peak wildlife hours. This option delivers exceptional scenery, outstanding photography opportunities, and a high level of comfort, though it comes at a higher cost and with cooler temperatures, especially in the mornings.

Staying in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA)

Lodges within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area provide a balance between convenient crater access and a quieter, more immersive safari experience set in scenic highlands and open landscapes. Guests enjoy fewer crowds than rim lodges, opportunities for cultural encounters and guided walks, and a slightly longer but still manageable drive to the crater floor.

Staying in Karatu (Outside the NCA)

Karatu offers a comfortable and cost-effective base just outside the conservation area, with a wider choice of accommodations and a warmer climate. It is ideal for longer northern circuit itineraries and travelers combining Ngorongoro with Lake Manyara and Tarangire, though it requires earlier departures and a longer drive to reach the crater.
